Food
The Sicilian Wine Valley is characterized also for the presence of numerous companies operating in the food sector. Many of such companies, having generally small and medium dimensions, render celebre the Sicialian food production in the world thanks to their high quality products and the penetration in the international markets.
Among Sicilian food products, particular attention is to pay to the extra virgin oil olive. One of the greater areas of production of olives is the territory of Castelvetrano, where it dominates the production of the “Nocellara del Belice”. Recently, the olearia production of the Province of Trapani has obtained an important acknowledgment, that is the Denomination of Protected Origin (DOP) Valli Trapanesi Trapanesi. Complementary olive products are the conserves of olives and various types of creams and patè of olives.
Other typical productions diffused in the territory of the Wine Valley are that relative ice cream, the coffee (toasting), the conserves and sea-salt.
A particular attention deserves also the fishing. The port of Mazara del Vallo (TP) is one of largest and important in Italy and it is characterized for the presence of an industrial district. Moreover, annually, in sea between the port of Trapani and the Egadi islands, happens the traditional “mattanza”, fishing of tunas.
